Introduction to Tajweed – a progression course from Level 1 (Steps to Qur’an), suitable for students that can read but need to learn tajweed. Topics will include Types of Errors, Makhārij and Sifāt of letters and more. There is a focus on practical reading (recitation and correction by teacher) and beginning memorisation (hifdh). Students must have completed Level 1 or similar (must be able to read the Qurʼan).

Course Outline

  • Progression course from Level 1 (Q-L1-STQ)
  • Suitable for students that can read, but want to learn tajweed
  • Introduction to Tajweed
  • Types of Errors
  • Makharij and Sifat
  • Theoretical and practical recitation
    • Reading to teacher / teacher correction student
    • Student listening to teacher, with student copying teacher
  • Combined Practicals:
    • Reading (recitation and correction by teacher)
    • Memorisation (hifdh)
  • Students who are still struggling with reading will be required to listen to (for example) Husary and recite alongside the sheikh, practicing at home.

  • Topic 1: Introduction to Tajweed
    • Ruling of Tajweed on Individuals and Masses
    • Definition of Tajweed
    • Different forms of Tajweed (practical/theoretical)
    • Where did tajweed come from (practical/theoretical)
  • Topic 2: Types of Errors
    • La’han Al-Jalee and La’han Al-Khafee
  • Topic 3: Makharij Al-Huruf (Points of Articulation/Exit of Letters)
  • Topic 4: Sifat Al-Huruf (Characteristics of Letters)
    • Permanent Sifat, ending with Introduction to Temporary Sifat (To be continued in Level 3)
End of Course Expectation
  • Students will have memorised the first ten surahs of the Qur’an (from Surah Al-Nas onwards)
  • Students should be able to pronounce the letters with greater proficiency, utilising knowledge of makharij and sifat
  • Students will have begun working on memorisation skills, beneficial for Level 3 and Level 4 and especially useful for further studies in Islamic sciences.
